How many fog machines do we need to make them change the weather forecast?2026
The installation “How many fog machines do we need to make them change the weather forecast?” consists of a fog machine that only emits fog when there is already fog in the air.
A fog machine is placed on a hill, which only activates and emits fog when the surrounding air is already foggy. It amplifies an existing weather phenomenon, contributes to making it last longer or creates the impression that it exists solely because of the machine. While the installation carries a mystical quality, it evokes a sense of imbalance on multiple levels: It brings abundance and more blurryness in times when much is already unclear, addressing not only the local foggyness but also a (socio-) political phenomenon. Likewise, the displayed chicken and egg problem (or here, fog and fog machine problem) addresses the apparent dominance of humans over so called natural phenomena. The title “How many fog machines do we need to make them change the weather forecast?” reinforces this while simultaneously echoing questions about the political efficacy of protests, for example.
